Any time someone wants to dig in Ontario, they must, by law, locate any infrastructure that may be hidden underground at least 5 days before they dig. Ontario One Call is a free service that contacts all infrastructure owners on the digger’s behalf to help them learn where it’s safe to dig.
When a locate request is submitted, Ontario One Call notifies owners of the buried infrastructure or their respective Locate Service Providers to review the request.
If a locate isn’t reviewed and closed out by the municipality on the Ontario One Call website within a specified timeframe, the municipality can be fined more than $300 per locate request per day. Oftentimes, locates can be delayed due to administrative bottlenecks.
